NUSTAR Hotel vs. Fili Hotel Cebu: Which Luxury Resort Should You Choose?

Cebu’s luxury hospitality scene experienced a monumental shift with the opening of the NUSTAR Resort and Casino complex along the South Coastal Road. Home to world-class dining, high-end luxury shopping, a massive 24/7 casino, and stunning ocean views, NUSTAR has quickly become the flagship destination for affluent travelers in the Visayas.

However, when booking a stay at NUSTAR, travelers face a common dilemma: Should you stay at NUSTAR Hotel or Fili Hotel Cebu?

Having personally stayed at and reviewed both properties back-to-back, I’m breaking down the key differences in room size, pricing, butler service, breakfast buffets, and overall vibe so you can decide which five-star experience is worth your hard-earned money.

1. The Vibe and Brand Philosophy

While both hotels share the exact same integrated resort infrastructure, their core concepts cater to different types of luxury travelers.

  • NUSTAR Hotel: Positioned as an ultra-luxury, exclusive sanctuary. It features just 223 rooms, placing an absolute premium on privacy, personalized attention, and quiet space. The aesthetic is contemporary, sleek, and international.
  • Fili Hotel Cebu: Branded as the Philippines’ first authentic five-star Filipino luxury hotel. It is much larger, boasting 379 rooms, and weaves subtle local artistry into its modern design—from native weaving patterns on the walls to artwork honoring Cebu’s vibrant Sinulog festival and local fishermen.

2. Room Size, Layout, and Amenities

Both properties offer surprisingly spacious rooms compared to standard five-star city hotels, but the extra investment at NUSTAR brings noticeable perks.

The Standard Room Comparison

  • Fili Hotel (Deluxe Sea View Room): Starts at approximately 37 square meters (around ₱9,000 to ₱10,000/night). It features a plush king-sized bed, a work desk, a cozy sofa, fresh local fruits (like rambutan and mangosteen), and a sea-facing bathroom equipped with a soaking bathtub and separate rain shower.
  • NUSTAR Hotel (Signature Ocean View Room): Spans a massive 54 square meters (around ₱15,000 to ₱20,000/night). The extra square footage gives the room a grand, residential apartment feel.

The NUSTAR Difference: 24/7 Butler Service & Smart Luxury

What truly sets NUSTAR Hotel apart is the inclusion of 24/7 dedicated butler service. With a single press of the “Butler Button” on your room phone, your butler can:

  • Automatically adjust your electronic blinds to reveal the sweeping ocean views.
  • Draw a custom exfoliating bubble bath with luxury bath gels and salts.
  • Replenish your fully complimentary mini-bar, which includes soft drinks, premium teas, and espresso coffee.

Additionally, NUSTAR features high-tech touches like a heated, fully automated smart toilet with remote controls and an adjustable TV angle.

3. The Breakfast Buffet Breakdown

Breakfast is where the operational scale between the two properties becomes most apparent.

NUSTAR Hotel (Exclusive & Refined)

Guests staying at NUSTAR have the option to dine in peace at the Lobby Lounge or the Executive Club Lounge on the 23rd floor.

  • The Atmosphere: Quiet, relaxed, and refined. You can enjoy order-to-table latte art and cold cuts without navigating crowds.
  • The Spread: Highly curated with gourmet items, an Indian section, and Korean specialties like Jimdak (braised chicken) and Bossaem. While it is smaller in total variety and lacks a massive roast beef carving station, the quality and peaceful environment make for an elevated morning.

Fili Hotel (Fili Café: The Massive Asian Feast)

If sheer variety and scale are what you crave, Fili Café inside Fili Hotel is an absolute feast.

  • The Spread: A sprawling culinary playground featuring dedicated stations for Filipino classics (Lechon belly, Danggit, Champorado, Alaminos longganisa), an extensive Korean section (Kimchi soups, Himul-jim seafood), an Indian station (Chana Masala, Panipuri), and a Chinese steamer section loaded with fresh Siomai, Hargow, and Hainanese chicken.
  • The Atmosphere: Busy, energetic, and fast-paced. Coming down early at 6:00 AM ensures you get the freshest selections straight out of the kitchen.

4. Shared Resort Amenities: Dining, Skydeck & Casino

No matter which hotel key card you hold, both NUSTAR Hotel and Fili Hotel grant you direct access to the complex’s world-class facilities:

  • The NUSTAR Skydeck: Rising over 100 meters above sea level on the 26th floor, this thrill-seeking glass walkway offers panoramic 360-degree views of the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) bridge and Cebu City for a ₱500 entry ticket.
  • Pools & Fitness: Fili Hotel offers access to multiple swimming pools (including family-friendly zones and lap pools), while NUSTAR features exclusive ocean-facing infinity pools paired with a 24-hour state-of-the-art fitness center.
  • Dining & Shopping: From high-end Korean BBQ at Yona and authentic handmade dumplings at the mall’s Chinese eateries to luxury shopping boutiques like Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Gucci, the resort is a self-contained entertainment capital.
  • 24/7 Casino & Sports Lounge: The central casino features a massive sports bar area with big screens, making it a prime spot to catch live global events like the World Cup.

The Verdict: Which Hotel Should You Book?

  • Book NUSTAR Hotel if: You are celebrating a special occasion, prioritizing absolute privacy, want 24/7 butler service, and prefer an ultra-spacious room with complimentary mini-bar perks and Executive Lounge access.
  • Book Fili Hotel if: You want a genuine five-star experience with authentic Filipino hospitality, love massive breakfast buffet spreads, want easy access to all of NUSTAR’s casino and dining amenities, and want to keep your nightly rate closer to ₱9,000–₱10,000.
